Why taking responsiblity for your life gives you power to change it...
Taking responsibility for your life is one of the most powerful things that you can do. Whether you realise it or not, what you have in your life right now, your relationships, your career, your possessions etc are all a direct result of your past thoughts and actions. Your current situation can't be blamed on anyone or anything else other than yourself.
I often hear people blaming their parents, the economy, politicians, bosses, luck or even fate for how their lives have turned out. However, the truth is, they made the choices, they made the decisions, they took the action (or usually they didn't take any action!), that got them to where they are and what they have in their lives today.
If you have been playing the 'blame game' you may find this particularly difficult to hear. It's not easy to find out that you and you alone are responsible for your life as it is now. It can be shocking to realise that your life is of your design, after all, it's much easier to blame someone or something else. However, the fact is that you have made the choices that have brought you to where you are today.
Once you acknowledge that you are responsible for your life, you can then use that power in order to take decisive action towards achieving the life you want, rather than accepting the life you've been 'given'. You can start to be more analytical in your choices, asking better questions leading to better decision making.
So if there is an area of your life that isn't how you would like it, take responsibility for it and ask yourself the following questions:
"What can I do to change this?"
"What do I need to do to make this better?"
"What else could this situation mean?"
"What are the positives can I take out of this?"
"What will I do differently as a result of this?"
"Who can help my change this situation"
"What can I do to change this to a positive?"
The great thing about taking responsibility is that you have the power to change anything you don't like and it doesn't have to be a long process, you just need to DECIDE and take ACTION. If you take action and things still don't change, it doesn't mean that you're a failure, it just means that the action you took wasn't the right action. Try something else and if that doesn't work, try something else until you find the right way. The people who succeed and seem to be 'blessed' have usually simply taken more action than you have, over a longer period of time. They haven't given up, they know that the more decisive they are and the more consistent action they take, the better the results they will get.
You don't have to accept 'the hand you've been dealt', if you're not happy with something you have or haven't got, change it ... it's up to you and you alone!
