Creating a 'Future Leaders Programme' at Hewden Plant Hire.

About Hewden

Hewden provide specialist plant and construction hire equipment to their clients nationwide.  They pride themselves on delivering the right equipment, fit for purpose, in good order, ready to work, safely and reliably carefully tailored to sector and needs.

The Challenge

Every forward thinking right-minded organisation wants to have the best possible pipeline of potential leaders. A group of talent for who in the medium term can be developed to improve engagement and effectiveness.  With the long-term goal of equipping these potential business leaders with the skills, experience and knowledge to further sustain the industry in which they work and this was the case for Hewden.

They reviewed many off the shelf options to meet their management development needs, but could not find the programme that delivered exactly what it, their graduates and high potential colleagues were looking for.  Working collaboratively with the Hewden Senior Management Team, What Next designed and implemented a unique syllabus with the aim of developing a strong leadership population with consistent skills in the following areas: 

  • Strategic awareness and capability
    • Proactive creation of ideas and solutions to business challenges
    • Well-grounded decision-making
    • Effective delegation to empower their colleagues to deliver great results
    •  Coaching skills and a focus on developing talent
    • Being role models for the Hewden vision and values to drive a performance culture 
    • Consistently demonstrate agility, flexibility and pace 
    • Develop the ability to lead the organisation through the challenges of rapid and continuing change 
    • Develop a robust succession pipeline for the future  

Programme Design

This was a unique programme designed to enable delegates to utilise what they learn immediately.  Whilst there was some theory, it was much more practical than a conventional ‘Leadership Development Programme’ with workshops that provide delegates with instantly usable skills and techniques.

Learning was further backed up through working on a 1:2:1 basis with a dedicated coach.  The aim was to not only help the individual grow as a leader by providing them with key business skills, but personally through the development of essential life skills.  There is a large emphasis throughout the programme on how the delegates manage themselves, their thoughts and emotions and their impact on others.

The Results

The programme has been viewed by Hewden as a great success, with 10 of the 12 graduate intake from the past 3 years completing the course and being promoted to more senior roles within the organisation and receiving mentoring at Director level.  As a result What Next continue to have an excellent ongoing relationship with Hewden and are looking forward to providing additional coaching services on a continuing basis.
